There is another very practical reason for shooting super35. Sometimes a good take is ruined because the camera operator didn't frame quite right or head room was compromised, etc. Since the picture still exists beyone the imaginary frame, the image can be recropped optically or easily manipulated during video transfer. That can do a lot for composition changes after the fact.
